# Errors and request IDs

Every response includes an `X-Request-ID` header. Successful JSON responses also include `requestId` at the top level. Error responses use one stable envelope:

```json theme={null}
{
  "error": {
    "code": "invalid_request",
    "message": "contactId must be a non-empty string of at most 128 characters.",
    "requestId": "req_example"
  }
}
```

| Status | Code | Meaning |
| - | - | - |
| `400` | `invalid_request` | A path or query value is missing or invalid. |
| `401` | `unauthorized` | The Bearer credential is missing, invalid, expired, or revoked. |
| `403` | `forbidden` | The credential lacks read access or cannot access the requested location. |
| `429` | `rate_limited` | The per-credential request limit was exceeded. |
| `500` | `internal_error` | The request could not be completed. |

Log the request ID and include it when contacting support. Do not log the Bearer credential or applicant report contents.
