# Admin appearance

> Choose a palette and appearance for admin screens on your browser.

Open **Admin → Settings → Admin appearance** to choose a color theme and
**Light**, **Dark**, or **System** appearance. Cobalt is the initial admin theme.
Choose **Funding Machine** to return admin screens to the stock gold palette.
Theme previews show the appearances each palette supports; a palette with only
one appearance uses that appearance even when another mode is selected.

Your choice applies throughout admin, including Processing, internal Contact
views, dialogs, and menus. Primary buttons follow the selected palette.
These are preferences for this browser, not agency or Location settings.

The Operator workspace and public or standalone pages keep the stock Funding
Machine colors and their separate Light, Dark, or System preference. Leaving
admin restores that appearance; returning restores your admin theme. Changing
admin appearance does not update the Operator preference. The navigation-bar
appearance toggle and `?theme=light`, `?theme=dark`, or `?theme=system` update the
appearance for the screen you are using.

If browser storage is unavailable, selections still apply in the current tab.
Settings will let you know they could not be saved for a later visit. Invalid
stored admin preferences return to Cobalt and Light.
